Most dentists, when placing an implant, eyeball the placement and depth of the implant. This imposes risks of placing the implant too deep and causing nerve or artery damage. New technology allows precision and decreases risks associated with placing implants, there is no longer a need to eyeball where an implant will go or use experience to determine the depth of the implant.
We use top of the line technology to digitally create a map of each patient’s mouth and a custom guide that produces accurate and precise implant placement. The result? A perfectly placed implant that significantly reduces risk and time.
1. CT Scan – Prior to the implant procedure, each patient will need to get a CT scan. This serves as a map of your mouth to ensure more accuracy for the virtual implant.
2. Digital Scan – Next, patients come into the office to get a digital scan. The digital scan serves as a map of your teeth.
3. The digital scan is superimposed with the CT scan. This allows the doctor to know exactly where the implant will be placed and creates an extremely accurate guide of a patients mouth.
4. The implants are placed virtually using the scans mentioned above. Once the virtual implant has been placed, the doctor will digitally create a surgical guide. The guide, is 3D printed and custom made to attach to the patient’s mouth, similar to a night-guard. The guide contains a titanium cylinder the implant materials will go through. This surgical guide ensures the dental implant is placed in the exact spot at the exact depth mapped out when virtually placing the implant.
5. The patient arrives on the scheduled day and time of the appointment and the surgical guide is placed in the patients mouth. The dentist is then able to precisely place the dental implant.
Dental implants are the best solution to replace your painful, missing or failing teeth. They last a lifetime and are very aesthetically pleasing.
So what are they, exactly? As mentioned above, the dental implant itself is a metal post that’s surgically inserted into your jawbone, where the tooth root used to be. The jawbone then fuses with the implant, which is just the inserted post, not the whole artificial tooth. At this point it is an extremely stable and secure anchor to hold the artificial crown.
Once a specially created crown has been attached to the implant by way of a connecting piece called an abutment, a durable, natural looking replacement tooth is then in place. Visit our guide for more information on what dental implants are.
Gaps from missing or removed teeth can cause the loss of tooth support deteriorate jawbone health. Face or cheek area can even start to sag as it lacks support from your jawbones. The cost of dental implants depends on how many teeth you are missing and the kind of implant you choose. For example, attaching a fixed bridge or denture to a few implants will not cost as much as creating individual implants for every missing tooth. Contact our office team for more information and about the types of payment plans available.
While some insurance companies may provide some benefits to cover the cost for dental implants, usually the patient will need to pay for the full cost of the treatment.
Getting dental implants can take several appointments to allow the jawbone to heal in between. Once the crown has been attached, it may take a few days for any swelling to subside. Avoid hot drinks, strenuous exercise and vigorous tooth brushing during this time.
After your dental implant has healed, you will find it easier to eat, drink and speak and you can be confident about your smile again!
